El-Adem. 1962.
Oil on canvas.
Lower right signed and dated. Inscribed "El Adem" upside-down on the reverse. 68 x 45.5 cm (26.7 x 17.9 in).
[AM].
• Remarkably strong work in his typical informal style.
• Schumacher conceived his one-of-a-kind pictorial language through layering and scratching of the material
• The year this work was made Schumacher traveled to Libya - the town of El-Adem was eponymous for this painting.
The painting is listed in the catalog of Dr. Ulrich Schumacher, Emil Schumacher Foundation, Hagen, with the inventory number 0/4.601. We are grateful to Mr Rouven Lotz, director of the Emil Schumacher Museum, Hagen, for his kind expert advice.
PROVENANCE: Galleria La Medusa, Rome.
Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia.
Good overall impression. With small isolated color losses in the margins and with somewhat larger color losses predominantly in places of the some of the deeper areas. With a few small retouches in the marginal area. With surface irregularities that appear to be partly matte and partly glossy, probably due to the material, predominantly in the lower half of the image. With craquelure in places and partially lightly rubbed in the edge area. With a few tiny spots, some of which are probably inherent in the work. The condition report was compiled in daylight with the help of a UV light source and to the best of our knowledge and belief.
