Alexander Archipenko's sculpture “La Negresse” was exhibited for the first time in 1912. It was a stone cast that is in private Swedish ownership today. With the artist's permission, the owner had two bronzes versions of this stone cast by the Pettersson foundry in Hägersten, Sweden. The present work is one of these two bronzes.
Cast in stone, this sculpture was shown at important exhibitions between 1912 and 1922. The following is a selection of those exhibitions:
1912 - Quai d'Orsay, Paris, Salon des Indépendants, Artistes Indépendant, 28e Exposition
1913 - Armory of the Sixty-Ninth Regiment, New York, Armory Show, International Exhibition of Modern Art, Association of American Painters and Sculptors, cat. no. 601
1913 - Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Armory Show, International Exhibition of Modern Art, Association of American Painters and Sculptors
1920 - XII. Esposizione Biennale Internationale d'Arte, Venice, Russian Pavilion.
1921 - Der Sturm, Berlin, Der Sturm, Fünfundneunzigste Ausstellung, Alexander Archipenko, cat. no. 5 (here: “Negerin / 1911 / Zement” )
1922 - Galerie Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin, Alexander Archipenko: Zehnte Retrospektive Ausstellung, cat. no. 35.
In its closed form, the bronze offered here is a fine example of Alexander Archipenko's design concept in the early 1910s. [EH]
