Kopf des Ganymed. 1995.
Bronze, painted.
Monogrammed on the side below the left shoulder, numbered and inscribed “GMW” on the back right of the plinth. One of 6 copies. Height: 60 cm (23.6 in).
[KA].
• The paintwork applied by the artist's hand makes each work a unique piece.
• Markus Lüpertz is a master of fragmentation and the use of primeval material, thus evoking emotions beyond the narrative.
• This work depicts the Greek hero Ganymede, the “most beautiful of all mortals” (Homer).
• Offered for the first time on the international auction market (source: artprice.com).
The authenticity of the present work has been confirmed by Prof. Markus Lüpertz, to whom we are grateful for his kind support in cataloging this lot.
PROVENANCE: Galerie Michael Werner, Berlin.
Acquired by the current owner from the above.
"The heads by Markus Lüpertz [are] not a direct expression of a pure idea, in fact, they are man-made. They will remain unfinished forever. Their surfaces show clear traces of treatment, the proportions contradict any anatomical correctness. Nothing is as it should be. Even the head of Ganymede (1995) is wounded and tormented, brittle and fragile, no longer the most beautiful of all mortals."
