Tessiner Landschaft. 1928/29.
Watercolor.
Rechts unten signiert. 60 x 46 cm (23.6 x 18.1 in), the full sheet. [CH].

• Between 1927 and 1929, Schmidt-Rottluff traveled to Ticino several times and found inspiration for his intense watercolors in the mountainous landscape.
• In an almost abstract manner, the artist dissolved the mountain range and Lake Lugano into softly flowing shades of blue, red, and green.
• He skillfully transforms the atmospheric panorama into an exciting composition of vertical, horizontal and diagonal elements, cold and warm contrasts and alternating soft and opaque areas of color
.

The work is documented in the archive of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, Berlin.

In the catalog for the Schmidt-Rottluff exhibition at the Kunsthütte Chemnitz in 1929, Rosa Schapire said the following about the most recent works:
"Free from both Naturalism and art dogma, the pictures of the most recent years reveal a greater closeness to nature. Unlike the adolescent, the mature man faces life. Increased human and artistic insight, restrained calm, mature benevolence, and wisdom have changed the form. In terms of color, the paintings are even more mature, more nuanced, and more differentiated than in previous years. In addition to the powerful contour, color is the essential element of Schmidt-Rottluff's oil paintings and watercolors, vibrant, jubilant or melancholic, depending on the mood of the moment."
quoted from Magdalena Moeller, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Leben und Werk, 2010, p. 75
