"The beginning of the theory of continued fractions" (Eugen David Smith)
Kettenbrüche wurden seit dem 16. Jahrhundert dazu verwendet, gute Näherungsbrüche für irrationale Zahlen zu finden. Rafael Bombelli verwendete Kettenbrüche bereits 1579, um damit Quadratwurzeln zu berechnen. Das vorliegende Werk von Cataldi ist das erste Buch, in dem Kettenbrüche verwendet werden.
"This treatise is probably Cataldi's most important work and represents a notable contribution to the development of the theory of infinite algorithms: by making more precise some ideas dating back to Hero of Alexandria and partly taking up the work of Raffaele Bombelli, Cataldi finds some square roots exploiting the arithmetic series and the algorithm of continuous fractions" (Riccardi; Übers).

Only edition of this extremly rare mathematical treatise on infinite algorithms, major work of the Bologna mathematician Cataldi (1552-1626). The first book with continued fractions. No copy in ABPC, RBH and JAP, apparently no copy ever sold at auction. With engr. title vignette. Contemp. cardboards. - Title mended at gutter and partly at side. Edges of binding with rests of former paper cover. Well-preserved and inside crisp copy.(R)
