• With a poised line in black chalks, Schmidt-Rottluff stages a reclined nude on a sofa that is not visible in the drawing.
• The elegant execution reminds the observer of the legendary "Viertelstundenakte" (lit.: "Fifteen Minutes Nudes"), with which the young "Brücke" artists - together with their models - untiringly practiced the depiction of body shapes and postures.
The work is documented in the archive of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, Berlin.

This drawing belongs to a group of works created during the autumn/winter months in Hamburg, where Schmidt-Rottluff rented a small studio between October 1910 and March 1912. At that time, Schmidt-Rottluff was dealing with the tension between resting and eccentric movement in various techniques. Among them is this simple, classically executed black chalk drawing of a nude probably reclined on a sofa. Arms and hands are crossed behind the head, the right leg is propped up while the left one hangs down. With a few strong strokes, Schmidt-Rottluff stages the slender, fine body, accentuates the internal forms and hatches the hairstyle of the apparently relaxed sleeping person; with her eyes closed.
