The basis of this uniquely shaped abstract work by Gerhard Richter is an album with Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Goldberg Variations in the recognized adaptation of the famous Canadian pianist Glenn Gould from 1982. 50 copies from the complete edition of 100 were made as Richter's contribution for the portfolio "Hommage à Cladders", published by Museumsverein Mönchengladbach in 1984. The edition comprises contributions from 17 other artists, among them Gotthard Graubner and Joseph Beuys. The 50 additional copies were sold individually. Owing to Richter's individual painting, which makes each copy a unique object, works from this remarkable edition are among the artist's most sought-after works on the international market. [SM]
