In the years from 1940 to1944 Gabriele Münter predominantly painted flower still lives, but also resorted to themes from the days of the "Blauer Reiter". In this context several landscapes that show the beloved mountains of the Murnau surroundings came into existence. In this work offered here the vast landscape of the ‘Murnauer Moos’ (Murnau Bog) stretches out in front of a mountain range executed in bright and differentiated shades of blue. Gabriele Münter’s gift to render the sensation of a landscape atmosphere in a picture becomes particularly obvious in this work: The autumnal atmosphere is not only reflected in the sparse brushstrokes of the foliage’s coloring, but also in the airy white of the fog above the vast moor landscape in front of the mountains. The work is registered with a sketch in the artist’s work notes under the title "Berglandschaft mit Nebelstreif, Novemberabend. (klar)" and with the date November 26, 1944. [EH]
