Bauernpaar in der Hütte (Andres und Annamargret Müller). 1919.
Woodcut.
Dube H 410. Gercken 1096 II (of III). Schiefler H 402. From an edition of 7 known copies. On blue Blotting paper. 56.5 x 36.9 cm (22.2 x 14.5 in). Sheet: 57,8 x 39,5 cm (22,7 x 15,5 in).
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner used this sheet as wrapping for a package to Nele van der Velde, daughter of the architect Henry van deVelde, as the skillfully smoothed creasemarks, perceptible only on verso, suggest. Unfortunately, the document signed by Nele van der Velde and mentioned in the catalog raisonné is lost. [CE].
Other copies of this print are in acclaimed museums like the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin and the Kunsthaus in Zürich.

We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Günther Gercken for his kind support in cataloging this lot.

PROVENANCE: Collection Nele van de Velde, Switzerland (obtained directly from the artist)
Private collection lower Saxony.

Kirchner portraiyed the couple in another woodcut that same year (cf. Dube H 407. Gercken 1095. Schiefler H 411). Andres Müller, born 1883, was the second-oldest son of Andreas and Catharina Müller, owners of the farm "In den Lärchen" in Frauenkirch. In 1919 he married Annamargret Kindschi. The artist captured the newly weds in their home. [CE]
