The world-famous "Felder" (Fields) are at the center of Günther Uecker’s creation. Our "Feld der Erwartungen", made between 1968 and 1973, is characterized by a dense and mystical aura, it is a very typical example from this work group which has experienced increasing popularity over the past years. The canvas, tightly stretched over the panel, is the carrier of the intuitively hammered nails. Uecker’s much described trance-like process of creation instinctively generates order. Each nail responds the position of the previous one. A mystical, almost divine force seems to put the nails in their swirling order, seems to guide their degree of inclination, creating a work of a highly purist aesthetic that captures the eye of the beholder and prompts to contemplate- a meditation picture characterized by a striking energetic denseness. In this work the contemplative effect is emphasized by the poetic title "Feld der Erwartungen"(Field of Expectations). The work is a homage to Adalbert Stifter, the Austrian Biedermeier writer. His literary work is coined by late-romantic narrations of nature. The prose of the nature-loving author describes rural idylls with a great love detail. The field is an artistic trademark for both Adalbert Stifter and Günther Uecker. Stifter’s lyrical accounts of grain-fields are reflected in Uecker’s fields of nails. Isn’t a rich grain-field in the wind the first association that comes to mind when looking at a nail field? Adalbert Stifter’s epic tales of nature help the reader to slow down, just as Uecker’s nail fields also have a meditative effect on the observer.
