Erste Ausgabe des bedeutenden Werkes. "Contains the second, third, and fourth Spanish letters of Cortes, being the second collection of them published to that date" (Sabin). - "Ouvrage extrêment important, contenant de précieux documents sur l'histoire de la conquête du Mexique .. Entre les pp. 176-177 .. sont 31 planches (num. 32) qui représentent le fac-simile d'un livre mexicain en caractère hiéroglyphiques , avec la transcription en lettres latines et la traduction espagnole" (Leclerc). - Die beiden anderen Tafeln zeigen den großen Tempel von Mexiko und den Azteken-Kalender. Ferner mit 1 Mexiko-Karte von J. A. Alzate y Ramirez (1769) und einer Küsten-Karte Kaliforniens.
EINBAND: Kalbleder der Zeit mit floraler Rückenvergoldung und Rückenschild. 26,5 : 19 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit Titelvignette, Frontispiz, 1 Initiale, 33 Tafeln (1 gefaltet) und 2 Faltkarten, sämtlich gestochen. - KOLLATION: 10 Bll., XVI, 175 (recte 176) S., 1 Bl., S. 177-400, 9 Bll. Register. - ZUSTAND: Tls. etw. fleckig, letzte ca. 40 Bll. wasserrandig und -wellig, Mexiko-Karte mit hinterl. Randeinriß, Titel mit kl. hinterl. Randausriß sowie kl. Tintenspuren im Oberrand, Frontisp. seitl. etw. knapp beschnitten. Einbd. stellenw. etw. beschabt.

Contemp. calf with floral gilt spine and small label. - Partly slightly stained, last 40 leaves waterstained and wavy, map of Mexico with backed tear, title with tear off (backed) and small ink traces at the upper margin, frontispice cropped close at the fore edge. Binding here and there scraped.
