During Gabriele Münter‘s years in Scandinavia her style changed fundamentally. Influenced by the art scene of the Swedish avant-garde and their liking for the decorative Expressionism of Matisse, Gabriele Münter‘s color palette also witnessed changes. The composition becomes subject to a more ‘decorative‘ style in a positive sense, which can also be observed in our work. The absence of the strong contours, which Münter added to the objects displayed in many of her works, allows the red blossoms to blaze up in front of the large color fields. Even though their botanical attributes remain definable, the blossoms appear independent, both in terms of form and color. Embedded in rich foliage, the composition fills the entire sheet, which makes this work so distinct from her later works, in which she rendered the blossoms with clearly defined contours in front of a neutral background.
