There is hardly any other representative of French Modernism next to Auguste Herbin whose art shows such a clear stylistic development that goes all the way to abstraction. While his roots are in Pointillism, Herbin soon attained a moderate form of Fauvism that bears the best elements of late Impressionism. The styleis entirely born from the color, a quality that finds fulfillment in this work. The scene‘s elementary luminance provides a sunny cheerfulness that is second to none. The strong and broad brush strokes capture the scene with great immediacy and add a fresh presence to the painting that could hardly be more striking. Even though Auguste Herbin did not settle with this type of interpretation, it marks a decisive point in his oeuvre on the path to abstraction by means of geometric pictorial elements, the fundament of his distinguished late period of creation.
