With his abstract painting in the manner of the surrealistic method mental automatism Matta creates eerie and unreal spaces with phantasmagorial beings that are half insect and half machine. He exerted great influence on the artists of Abstract Expressionism, among them Arshile Gorky and Robert Motherwell. Apart from the Documenta exhibitions II, III and VI, Matta's art was also on display in grand retrospectives in Valencia, Barcelona (1983) and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1985).
