The sheet was made in commemoration of scenes from his childhood. Beckmann wrote in his diary on 14 September 1945: "At night the Rokin [the street in Amsterdam that Beckmann lived and worked on from 1937 to 1947] is brightly lit and it felt like when I was a child living in Leipzig, looking out on the illuminated streets with Lixer at night" (quote after Hofmaier, p. 606).
