The gestural power of the line comes to the fore again in Schmidt-Rottluff's woodcuts from the 1920s. However, now it is the white line that determines the sheet's composition. In 1922/23 he made several woodcut portraits. The woman on the piano is an exceptional sheet, because of the unusual perspective and the white accentuating lines. The woman's body is hardly defined, the focus is on the face, the hands and the instrument.
