Sir Anthony Caro, doubtlessly one of the key figures in English post-war sculpting, put the focus of his abstract steel sculptures, made during his best period of creation, on the problem of the base. As of around 1959/60 he liberated the object from the base – a widely noticed decision, which went hand in hand with a radical style that entirely negated the base. From 1966 on Caro pursued a new path: He began to make the famous "Table Pieces", among which the object offered here also counts. Caro intentionally sought to render his ideas in smaller formats. The table as base of this complex object has always been a conceptual part of these works, but the idea of the "Table Pieces" clearly goes beyond the long tradition of table sculptures: Especially earlier objects are designed in a way that they integrate the table's edge as a "base" without which they could not have a firm stand, for instance on a planar ground. Through the conceptual integration of the table as base, Caro forces the observer of his table sculptures into a meditative occupation with every detail of this composition and to grasp the subtlety of the "Table Pieces" in every dimension. "Table Pieces" by Sir Anthony Caro are in possession of renowned museums and public collections around the globe, among them the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo in Barcelona, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Bavarian State Painting Collection in Munich, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Art in Osaka, the Tate Gallery in London or the Hamburg Kunsthalle.
