When Emil Nolde took the brush into his hands in order to make one of his flower watercolors, he did so with the emphasis of an admirer of nature’s richness of colors, which he tried to render as undiminished as possible. Nolde had worked out the technical means on his own, and this way he achieved the extraordinary pure color effects by applying the watercolors onto wet paper. Such a process required an extreme concentration on the subjects that Emil Nolde always depicts in a manner that seems to go beyond the scope of the picture. However, all emotional power that the flower watercolor compositions possess are subordinate to the pure lucent color effects. It is a striking optical magic that the quite taming of all emotional observation emanates.
