Königin Therese von Bayern. 1855.
Oil on canvas.
Hase-Schmundt 203. 76.5 x 61 cm (30.1 x 24 in).
Verso of canvas signed, dated and inscribed "Ihre k. Majestät, Therese, Königin v. Bayern. / gemalt v. Jos: Stieler 1855." as well as with canvas stamp. [CB].
Stieler's sales register from 1855 mentions as follows: "Königin Therese in Brustbild, 2 mal gemalt für Erzherz. Hildegarde 50 (Louis d’Or)." (English: Queen Therese in half length portrait, twice painted for archduchess Hildegard 50 (Louis d’Or).) This means that he executed the painting twice, however, he only got paid for one. The drawing with cap from 1842 (cf. von Hase-Schmundt 209) served as model for the later posthumous portrait. The work offered here is the unsold copy that remained in the artist's possession.
PROVENANCE: From the artist estate.
Since in family possession.
