Paul Rohs' wife Herta was a friend of Käthe Kolbe. This portrait, presumably a commission work, has its origin in this friendship. A tendency towards a certain monumentality is obvious in Georg Kolbe's portrait plastics. Despite all individual facial features, Kolbe attains a standardized overall impression, a key aspect of monumentality. The massive head is carried by the chamfered plinth which leads to an optical elevation that, in return, adds remarkable balance to the head. Rohs portrait head clearly counts among Georg Kolbe's most mature achievements in sculpting. [KD]
