Rupprecht Geiger is one of the most important representatives of color field painting in Germany. Geiger finds his way to abstraction in the late 1940s. While the compositions of the 1950s and early 1960s are still composed by differentiated blue and red tones and dominated by each circular and rectangular forms, the reduction and concentration of color and form reach their peak in the late 1960s. From now on the circle as symbol of concentration is at the heart of Geiger's work. Trough the increased use of luminescent colors without claiming any reference to nature and thereby the world of figuration, the circle grows into a meditative color space. As an especially characteristic example of this artistic period, in the present painting Geiger builds a compressed circular form by using a gentle yellow color and modulates a hardly perceivable color gradient filled with soft movement.
