Mack dedicated this light relief to his artist colleague Piero Manzoni. The pioneer of the Informel passed away in 1963. The object's different relief structures enter into dialog with the light, they leave their static sculptural status and come alive. The overall impression is no longer determined by the forms' materiality, it is the light that is decisive for their expressiveness. The play of both the filigree and the coarse net structures in front of the shimmering background evokes very sensuous optical impressions that change with the observer's perspective. Heinz Mack described the inspirational moment for his light reliefs as follows: "An unexpected opportunity to make aesthetic movement visible came up when I accidentally came across a thin metal foil on a sisal carpet. When I picked up the foil the light had a chance to vibrate. [..] My metal reliefs, which I prefer calling light reliefs, are solely formed with pressure from my fingers and require light instead of color to come alive. When polished like a mirror, a slight relief is enough to shatter the light's calm and to set it in vibration. The potential beauty of these objects would be a pure expression of the light's beauty."
