After Nolde had settled on Utenwarf he increasingly focused on the things and the landscape that he was surrounded by. Sky and sea became dominating themes, Emil Nolde interpreted both in an unprecedented manner. His world of colors opens up a perspective to the observer that adds new meaning to this subject owed to the coloring's poignancy and denseness. Presumably under the influence of the splendid exotic colors of the South Sea, where Emil Nolde and his wife traveled to shortly before the outbreak of WW I and where his artistic creation found decisive impulse, Nolde saw the landscape of his home with a feeling that would determine his works for years. Sky and sea. Where do they begin? Where do they end? Colors and forms merge and form a magic unity. The three little vessels are an optical anchor in this feastful composition.
