The calm cheeriness is what makes Paul Klee's drawings so fascinating. Both in terms of the linear buoyancy of their conception, as well as for the overall composition itself and, not least, for the always spot on titles that Paul Klee gave his works - the artist reveals a lot about the thoughts behind his intentions. But caution is advised, as the playful airiness of his drawings is deceptive. Paul Klee worked up thoughts that obviously troubled him. The works are to be regarded as expressions of a mind-set that has its origin in the intensive occupation with bringing ideas to live in pictures. Especially his accuracy in execution, including the hand-written titles, are proof of a long identification process. Accordingly, his drawings have to be perceived in more than just one way. On the one hand as what they are - drawings, on the other hand as creations of an idea coming from the unconscious and eluding an actual description.
