The summers on Lake Leba in Pommerania were of crucial importance for Max Pechstein's paintings. Pechstein said he felt a deep sympathy for the landscape and the people. Contrary to the hectic life in Berlin after World War I, it seems that Pechstein had found the desired ideal of a peaceful country life there. Works from these days still show the influence of Expressionism, which becomes particularly obvious in the color values. However, the nativeness of this almost untouched landscape influenced his pictorial creation of these days so much that Pechstein picked up motifs he had found there even after World War II. The simple composition of the picture is in line with the actual landscape impression and the compact forms show the influence of Expressionism. The composition's similarity to the dated watercolor with the same subject may be astounding, however, it is a recurring phenomenon in Max Pechstein's oeuvre.
