Max Pechstein created this winter landscape in reminiscence of the sojourns in Leba. The composition's clear strictness reminds of works from the time of Expressionism. However, the restrained coloring shows a focus on a more objective approach, even more so as the subject was painted from memory. What remained was a will to render a clear form and the impressive arrangement of the composition, which was typical of Pechstein. The popular motif of the sun's reflections on the water, ingeniously conceived by Claude Lorrain and masterly alienated by Edvard Munch, is repeated here. With this winter landscape, entirely free from any contemporary metaphors, Max Pechstein created a document of his love for a landscape that had gone lost for him. [KD]
