Emil Nolde attains the intensive color impression of his famous watercolors also in smaller formats. The light refractions at different times of the day and the sky's unusual colors high above the sea were crucial for Emil Nolde's interpretations. The unfathomable variations of the sea and the barren landscape were interpreted by Nolde in a richness of motifs that had neither been conceived nor captured by any other artist before him. With his watercolors and other works Nolde rendered unmatched homage to the northern landscape. [KD]
