Heinrich Campendonk's works are full of references that reflect the zeitgeist. On the one hand we find aspects of French contemporary art, mainly Cubism, on the other hand formal aspects that clearly hint at Campendonk's painter colleagues, first and foremost at Franz Marc, are obvious. However, what is most decisive is how Campendonk worked up these influences to find his own style. This work has been influenced by this aspect in a special way. The tendency to disintegrate the compact forms in order to embed them in a magic world of colors can also be found in works by his painter colleagues from the "Blaue Reiter", of which Campendonk was a member, too. The dream worlds that enrich his works by adding an aura of a fragmentary detachedness are half real. Their content is enigmatic. Decoding and viewing them in context of the overall composition remains the observer's surprisingly joyful task.
