After he had had first lessons in art at the academy in Dresden, Emil Rau transferred to the Munich academy in 1879 and was a student of Wilhelm von Lindenschmit. As of 1883 Rau was active as an artist in Munich. Genre scenes and rural motifs that show the influence of Franz von Defregger count among his preferred subjects.
