A circle of young artists, predominantly of Polish origin, began to form around Josef von Brandt in Munich as of 1875, the so-called 'Brandt-Schule'. Next to Jan Chelminski, Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski and Franz Roubaud were also part of this group. Illustrations of historical Cossack- and Tatar warriors, horse markets and hunting scenes contributed to the artists' success over a long time. Additionally, the Polish artists showed strong interest in scenes from Napoleon's campaigns. Around 1870 Maksymilian Gierymski revived the historical genre of coursing in Rococo costumes, over the following years his artist friends Wierusz-Kowalski and Chelminski also took on this subject.
