The destructive element fire is used as a creative force in Otto Piene's art. Piene adds a "proper" color, as "the color's vibration is able to communicate itself to the observer through its continuity in a calm and therefore sustainable manner. The purer the color, the more sensitive it gets and has an ability to absorb and transport even the slightest waves." (quote after: ex. cat. Mack-Piene-Uecker, Kestner-Gesellschaft Hanover, 7 May - 7 June, 1965, p. 107). The vibrancy of the rich red underlines the billowy black smoke formation. The whole image pulsates, swings and vibrates, it becomes an optical source of energy.
