In 1889, the year of his first bigger success, the painting "Neckerei" was made. It was the first work with faun and nymph, lovingly chasing one another in a sparse forest. From this point on the theme would occupy a central position in Stuck's oeuvre, finding realization in many variations. This composition shows both the influence of plein-air painting in the manner of the School of Barbizon as well as references to Arnold Böcklin. A smaller preliminary study was made in preparation of the painting the same year (cf . Voss 12/204).
