In his art Heinz Mack experiments with the optical abilities of light, withreflecting surfaces and material values that undergo a visual coming to life through the light. Even though Mack's art was partly conceived as 'unartful' or 'technoid' in the early 1960s, his creations, devoid of any artistic duct, do not negate artistic subjectiveness as a means of expression. Mack said the following in an unpublished manuscript: "Artists like us strive to be understood by others through our art. But when I see how much passion, patience and energy we put into our art, even our whole existence, regardless of the rest of our lives- and when I then see how indifferent and with how little interest andunderstanding the audience observes these works, all this existential effort seems more than absurd and grotesque." (Quote after: Dieter Honisch, Mack. Skulpturen 1953-1986, Düsseldorf/Vienna1986, p. 27).
