The large amount of nudes that Ernst Ludwig Kirchner made are an expression of his special interest in this subject. Even though he and his painter colleagues had ample opportunity to make nude drawings in the open during their sojourns at the Moritzburg Lakes, Kirchner was not content. In a short period of time he made countless drawings in his studio after the models that he could have depicted plein-air. The female nude seems like a sort of core competency that he pays special attention to. He shows an easy but poised line management so that he creates a pictorial whole. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner attached special value to his drawings and regarded them as a genre of their own. His graphic oeuvre comprises an abundance of works that is unmatched among the painters of his generation.
