Unlike it was the case with his contemporaries, Felixmüller wanted his graphic work to be conceived as the art of a painter who sought to animate his visual content through pictorial values. In doing so, he breaks up the vast planarity characteristic of expressionist graphic art by placing parallel or crossed line structures. This way he makes sure that different color values can be distinguished even in black and white illustrations. This sheet's lucent coloring additionally underlines the pictorial quality. Felixmüller, who was occupied with the human face not only during this early period of creation, often included a narrative element in his portraits. Longing as human sensation is also the basis of the illustration of "die ferne Geliebte" (the remote lover).
