LITERATURE: Ex. cat. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Gemälde und Graphik der Sammlung Dr. F. Bauer - Davos, Nuremberg 1952, no. 40.

Many of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's drawings are characterized by a momentary presence, however, without any deficits in terms of effect. Kirchner captured the oriental dance band in its rhythmical swing of interpretation. The poised line sketches the band members and the overall composition suggests an atmosphere that Kirchner captured intuitively. Every line is in its right place, neither too many nor too few. The group of dancers in their easy gesture in left faces the musicians, their closeness makes for a charming contrast to the dancers. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, whose drawings occupy an important position in his oeuvre, often signed such well-made sheets at a later point and inscribed them with the original date. As far as their stylistic assignment is concerned, one would not guess that they were made at such an early point. But that does not decrease their importance. They stand for a unique graphic talent that was unparallelled in those days.
