This work is the original rear side of the work "Teller mit Äpfeln" from 1932, which is also offered in this auction. The composition was exposed in 2005 and the board was split. [KD/ATh].

In his early years Alexej Jawlenky's painting oscillated between various conceptions that especially differed in the usage of painting techniques. From a Late-Impressionism with rich colors over influences from Cézanne and van Gogh all the way to a rather formal composition, works from this period are documents of the artist's creative quest. Alexej Jawlensky took on many inspirations, some of which he abandoned immediately. This way he attained his own style, a style that was unmistakable in the early 20 th century avant-garde art. Our work also originates from these days, its pure surface painting shows influences from the Murnau School around Wassily Kandinsky. The black contours, which we also find with Kandinsky and Münter, have their origin in the fascination for the naive rural reverse-glass paintings typical of the region at the foothills of the Alps. The still lives' small objects, in this case a horseman, come from the collection of folk art, for which especially Gabriele Münter had a strong liking. The strictly planar composition is an early document of Jawlensky's attempt to become independent from his models, in order to find his own style in pure color field painting.
