Sitzende Dame mit blauem Hut. Um 1920/25.
Pastel and chalk drawing.
With estate stamp and signature of Annaliese Tappert on verso. On light grey-green cardboard. 63 x 46,5 cm (24,8 x 18,3 in), almost the full sheet.
Tappert’s female models are almost invariably ladies who are solidly built. Picture-filling physical presence was Tappert’s chief concern both in his nudes and his portraits. The broad brushwork demarcating clearly enclosed color surfaces underscores the models’ physical character. Tappert approached his sitters as directly as possible, viewing them as central to composition, and considered all par erga superfluous. What he has in common with Corinth is a feeling for corporeality; his link to Kleinschmidt is the sensuousness of voluminous forms. Tappert, however, goes his own way. In her too close visual presence, the woman is to him not the object but rather the being who directs what is happening. [KD].
