Darwins berühmtes Werk über die Abstammung des Menschen bildet eine Art Fortsetzung zu seinem Hauptwerk über den Ursprung der Arten und enthält reichhaltiges neues Beweismaterial zur Evolutionstheorie. "This is really two works. The first demolished the theory that the universe was created for Man, while in the second Darwin presented a mass of evidece in support to his earlier hypothesis regarding sexual selections" (Garrison/M.). - Erstmals verwendet Darwin hier das Wort Evolution! "The word 'evolution' occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, on page 2 of the first volume of the first edition, that is to say before its appearance in the sixth edition of The origin of species in the following year" (Freemann S. 129).
