PROVENANCE: Private collection Northern Germany.
Max Schwimmer's first years of creation were coined by Expressionis. In those days he made a large number of paintings characterized by their artistic brilliance. Karl Scheffler, a contemporary and friend of Schwimmer, expresses his acknowledgement as follows: "Max Schwimmer is one of Germany's most remarkable talents. [..] a master of colors by nature and discipline, devoid of system and theory [..]" (quote after: Max Schwimmer, Das grafische Werk, ex. cat. Museum der Bildenden Künste, Leipzig 1975, p. 9). Our expresive and charming work by the popular illustrator originates from his expressionist period, which was succeeded by a turn to Impressionism as of 1923. [CB].
