Editio princeps of both works by Philostratus and Eusebius as well as the Latin translation of Zenobio. Very nice Aldus print , one of the earliest using Aldus printers' mark with anchor and dolphin. Work by Philostratus - the first profane biography of a miracle worker - is entirely printed in Greek type, except for title. - In his dedication letter to the translator Zenobius Aldus admits that he struggled for a long time whether to publish the biography of Philostratus or not, as it is, in the end, just a gathering of fairy tales. But since he had started the edition, he had to finish it, and include Eusebius' admirable work as a kind of antidote.
II: Renouard p. 77, 8. - Aldine coll. Berlin 259. - Adams I 1. - Caillet 5489. - Second increased edition of this unique collection of ancient and Byzantine authors, mostly with writings on demonology . The revision and translation from Greek was carried out by humanist Marsiglio Ficino, whose own works are aded to the work at the end. "Précieux documents sur l'hermétisme & le magisme" (Caillet on first edition from 1497). Also with texts by Proclus, Porphyrius, Synesius, Psellus, Hermes Trismegistos et al.
Condition: Partly negligible waterstain in upper margin, title of first work with minor fingerstaining, ownership inscription of 17th cent. Spanish hand and of the Jesuit College Segovia (?). Beautiful copy from the coll. H. N. Friedlaender (sale Christie's 24 April 2001).

I: Renouard p. 26, 2. - Aldine coll. Berlin 55. - Adams P 1067.
