Differenzierte Konzentration. 1959.
Oil on canvas.
Signed lower left. With title and number "54" on stretcher. 90 x 72 cm (35,4 x 28,3 in).
PROVENANCE: From artist's estate.
EXHIBITION: Grosse Kunstausstellung München, 20 June - 4 October, 1959, Haus der Kunst, Munich, cat. no. 566 (with ex. label on stretcher).
LITERATURE: Wolfgang Augustyn, Ernst Klinger. 1900-1962, Lindenberg 1997, p. 86 (with illu.).
After Ernst Klinger predominantly made landscapes, portraits and still lives in the 1920s and 1930s, that were in line with New Objectivity both in terms of motif and style, the artist attained a very different style in his later period of creation. As of the early 1950s he began making the first geometric-abstract pictures that were shown in the exhibition "Großen Kunstausstellung" in the 'Haus der Kunst'. This oil painting was also shown there in 1959. What's particularly remarkable is how Klinger created manifold associations that call reminiscence of gems or ice figures. [KP].
