Inscribed "48/80" by a hand other than that of the artist. Very good impression from the edition posthumously publ ished by Avalun-Verlag, Vienna 1919.
The "Kauernde" (The Crouching) is Egon Schiele's largest and most important etching. The model, filling the sheet and place in a slightly diagonal position, turns her head towards the observer. The figure's slight turn adds a notion of dynamic and spatiality to the composition, which maintains a fascinating balance with the illustration's clear linearity. Schiele adds subtle erotic to the sheet by means of the rolled up shirt. [KH].
