This work is a prime example of Christian Rohlfs' very own concept of the woodcut as a means of artistic expression. Before printing he applied color layers of a varying thickness to the printing block, often with a brush. These prints are basically single proofs, which are more like a monotype. This sheet was eventually worked over with an accentuating tone of blue. "This approach to print art shows that to Rohlfs printing did not serve as a mere means of reproduction, but rather as a way to create prints as single sheets."
