What is most striking about Ernst Ludwig Kirchner‘s graphic works is the spontaneous straightforwardness with which he realizes his ideas. Not even the slightly clumsy posture of the hands cannot keep Kirchner from capturing what he sees like a snap-shot. The lines of the litho chalk are defined and confident. The shaded and nervous dashes are signs of haste, but yet, the compositions chiaroscuro is balanced. By integrating the margins of the printing stone, which make for a slightly broken frame that underlines the drawing’s fragility, Kirchner manages to transform a spontaneous scene to a lasting composition.
