The small watercolor made in spring 1914 at Hintergingen on Lake Thun, can definitely compete with the famous watercolors of the journey to Tunisia in terms of the colors‘ intensity. The rather swiftly captured garden study is a masterpiece in terms of the composition’s density and the mixed technique of watercolors and color chalk. August Macke’s extraordinary sense for colors helps him to create unmatched images in almost magical colors. By combining the two techniques, both merging to a harmonious effect, Macke‘s great talent becomes obvious in an ingenious manner. Even in small formats – the sheet itself is from a sketchbook - August Macke manages to capture the overall situation without losing himself in too many details. Using the watercolors’ transparency, he visualizes the light-filled blaze of colors of a garden in summer. [KD].
