Since Cornelis Ploos van Amstel up until the late 19th century this work had been considered to be a work by Rembrandt. [CM].
PROVENANCE: Presumably Valerius Röver. In his hand-written inventory in the Amsterdam university library, this work is listed in portfolio 8, no. 272 2 still under the right ascription "Hoogstraten", a drawing with the title "Simeon in den tempel" (see C.G. Boerner cat. "Aus unseren Mappen", III drawings, fall 1977).
