Private collection northern Germany (present from the artist, ever since family property).
Our India ink drawing with color chalks from 1958 was a present from the artist for Walter Erben, author of the monography "Marc Chagall, der Maler mit den Engelsflügeln", which was released by the Prestel-Verlag Munich in 1957. Chagall presumably depicted himself in this work. (cf. White Selfportrait (Mourlot 181), Selfportrait at Window (Mourlot 182), The Painter and the Woman, gouache, Nichido Gallery, Tokyo). He does not see himself as a painter with palette, but inmidst flowers and dream-like creatures, which are present in almost all his works. Our work in fresh colors is a charming example of Chagall's poetic style. [EH].
