In the years after World War II Karl Schmidt Rotluff went back to his ideas from earlier days, as he was able to work freely and without constrictions again. However, color chalks were a new element of his art, of which he made more and more use of. As it is the case with our work, they take over the role of a coloring, as the elementary India ink drawing, which determines the sheet’s duct, remains the composition’s most fundamental trait. The strong and certain stroke of the brush, which had always been a feature of Schmidt-Rottluff's drawings, remained. The color chalks, however, add an artistic duct to the sheet that suggests a new view onto things. [KD].
