Karsch 161/II (of II). Inscribed "Original-Litho 60 dr." lower left. Presumably one of 60 uncounted copies. On yellowish machine-made laid paper. 70,4 x 50,1 cm (27,7 x 19,7 in), the full sheet
Presumably color variant with green stone for the robe of the mother and the skin as well as without the green shades to the daughter's cheeks and neck. Sheet 2 from the series "Zigeuner", which was presumably released by Mueller himself in 1927, it was first exhibited in the Galerie Nierendorf.
PROVENANCE: Private collection southern Germany.
This work can well be considered one of the most striking sheets from the gypsy series, which, with their unique conception and execution, definitely make for the highlight of the artist’s graphic works. Like no other artist in his days, Otto Mueller seems to have been extraordinarily inspired by the picturesque appeal of gypsy life. Significant impressions gained on a journey to the Balkan in 1924, he even lived with gypsies for some time, are ingeniously visualized in this series. A romantic longing for freedom can be found in these lithographs in colors just as an innocent eroticism within the motifs. [SM].
